Subject: Why is my site coming from California?!

I’m in London, but looking at your IPs it shows that you are serving my website from California. Can that be right? Why is that? I thought you were supposed to serve my website from some places close to me?

Yes you are correct, it is a common issue and depends on how your website is configured, and how cloudflare is set up to serve it.

Here are some reasons as to why your site is being served from California despite your location in London.

Your Dns and traffic can be routed to any of our datacenters based on, not just geo proximity, but also based on network conditions.

While we do have Edge servers in London and across Europe, sometimes traffic is routed to a different location due to:

*Network congestion,

*Latency

*Routing policies of your ISP

*Load balancing

*DNS resolution

Kindly check your Load Balancing settings in the Cloud Flare Dashboard under Protect and Connnect » Delivery & Performance » Load balancing

Set up alerts

You can configure alerts to receive notifications for changes in the health status of your pools or endpoints.

Check your Origin server location.

If your Website is being served in California, It might be that your origin server is actuallly hosted in California.

Or perhaps Cloudflare is bypassing cache content and pulling directly from the Origin.

Check your cache settings and page rules please

When troubleshooting Cache Rules, use Cloudflare Trace to determine if a rule is triggering for a specific URL. Check the following link to perform a trace request: CloudFlare Trace

Dns Resolution location.

Check with tools like ping traceroute or online Ip lookup tools. DO they show the location of the DNS resolver or Cloudflare’s IP block, which may be registered in California even though the actual server responding is closer.
